Fidgets are simultaneous
sensory-motor stimulation strategies―the four
S's. If something we are engaged in is not
interesting enough to sustain our focus,
additional sensory-motor input that is mildly
stimulating, interesting, or entertaining allows
our brains to become fully engaged and allows us
to sustain focus on the primary activity. The
strategy we choose should not employ the same
sensory-motor input we are using for the primary
activity, or it will divert rather than support
our attention and focus.
Additionally, part of learning
to fidget effectively is learning to choose a
fidget that not only works for us in that
moment, but that is also situationally
appropriate and respectful of those around us.
